Of course there is nothing wrong with profits. As you said, profits are a tool used to attain values, but they are not the end-value.
However, I disagree when you say
"Breaking even never inspired anyone."
Seeing other businesses fail or break even brings inspiration to capitalists who believe they have built a better mouse trap. As an example, it was the bloated cost structure of other carriers that inspired Rollin King and Herb Kelleher to found Southwest Airlines in the early 70s.
Southwest has been a remarkable success. 2004 was "its 31st consecutive year of profitability." And after September 11th, when the other carriers were pleading for government aid, Southwest was comfortably profitable. And I am certain that the continual ineptitude of the other carriers never ceases to inspire Southwest's executives. The cost overruns of the other carriers only reinforces Southwest's belief in its low-cost business model and should only inspire them to improve on it.(http://www.southwest.com/about_swa/airborne.html)
That is all.

PS- If you are ever flying domestically in Canada, fly WestJet www.westjet.com whenever you can. WestJet shares Southwest's low cost philosophy.
