Although I generally agree with Von Mises, I have a quibble with this phrase:

which governments are devoted exclusively to the task of protecting the individual's life, health, and property against violent aggression.

Governments should not be concerned with the individual's health.  I would substitute the word Liberty for health.

Government is of little worth if it doesn't concern itself with sparing individuals from violent aggression in all spheres (save love).

Surely you would agree, if you give it a moment's reflection. Perhaps you are thinking of medical health? Even so, a government does have such duty though it serves it legitimately, and best, only by ensuring the generalised easy running of capitalism.

I always took "health" in this context to mean that the govt would protect individuals from, say, being poisoned, rather than that the govt would, e.g., provide health ins.

Conquest does not pay and war becomes obsolete.
Nice thought. Now all you have to do is tell the bad guys to give it up.

Any bad guy out there listening?

Also, maybe it would be a good idea to tell this to some of the individual entrepreneurs who freely sell the heavy weaponry they manufacture to the bad guys so they can arm themselves to the teeth.

"...which governments are devoted exclusively to the task of protecting the individual's life, health, and property against violent aggression."

Don't minarchists generally believe that the State should protect people's health against violent aggression? They shouldn't protect your life, health or property from your own destructive and bad choices, but all these things should be protected against aggression. Right?

By the way, this is an awesome quote. Mises rules. Thanks for posting it, Heidi!

I would also like to know what von Mises meant by 'health' in this quote. A possibly related question : What do Objectivists think of government intervention with regard to serious threats to public health? Such as epidemic diseases. Is quarantine justified? By who? Under what conditions? This may be a subject for a new thread.

Great quote. Lift your eyes up to the positive things, the vision in the distance instead of constantly focusing on the everyday muck at your feet.

Mr Coate you wrote:  Great quote. Lift your eyes up to the positive things, the vision in the distance instead of constantly focusing on the everyday muck at your feet.
Isn't  though by solving the problems of  the everyday  muck at your feet that we can then lift our eyes to the positive things?

Imagine a state of affairs in which governments are devoted exclusively to the task of protecting the individual's life, health, and property against violent aggression
How can any sane man  believe  that a protector protects us just for the sake of our protection. This is not possible yet.
Imagine was written by the beetles  long time ago, the song is still very topical.
