I read this sentence and it really reminded me of the idea of active virtue. Not only do you have to keep learning in order to continually expand the efficacy of you mind, but you have to keep actively pursuing virtue in order to make yourself more virtuous. Just like the mind cannot simply be put on hold until there is a question for it to answer, your virtues should not be put on hold until there is something to pass judgement upon or an ethical dilemma to solve.

I don't think that the laws of nature ever change. Our understanding of what they are may change, but we just have to do they best we can at any given moment.

Dear Jeff isn't though painful to know that our understanding of that which exists will remain always limited.

Recap of the above:

Jeff celebrates man's ability to increasingly march forward into the wild, blue yonder -- discovering new and life-enriching wonders, one after another, after another (while building character and virtue).

Ciro laments of not being born with an effortless omniscience -- one which would've circumvented the need for human growth in character, and the exhilerating enthusiasm of personally experiencing that growth in yourself, and the sense of accomplishment of growing out of previous confines.

Well, it's a close call, but I'm leaning toward Jeff's perspective on the matter ...

Ed

Ed, please don't get me wrong  I agree with you 100%.
I left my native country just for that reason,e.i. to improve myself
and grow in character etc... I come from Italy when i was just
a kid. I surpassed  all my expectations. I never went to school
never took any english lessons, and guess what? I am now able to post messages here  and discuss philosophic thoughts  with you and so many other intelligent persons like you. And in addition to that, from poor, I became a millionaire. You see, I believe in human growth.
I just love to discuss philosophic thoughts that's all. You have got some information about me now. I have read many of your messages  on this forum and I have enjoyed them all. Thanks for answering.
best Ciro.

Okay Ciro, but I now have several questions for you. When you say:

-------------
Dear Jeff[,] isn't [it] painful to know that our understanding of that which exists will remain always limited[?]
-------------

... the only "pain" that I can imagine is the "pain" of not being born omniscient (all-knowing).

-Do you mean anything other than that?
-Do you wish to retract the question, because you've become aware of what your words imply?
-Do you see the 'flaw in thinking' that is revealed in your question -- as it had been posed?
-Do you think that a man's character should be judged by his 'questions,' at least as much as it is judged by his 'answers?'
-Do you think that we should judge the character of others?

Ed, you write: the need for human growth in character, and the exhilerating enthusiasm of personally experiencing that growth in yourself, and the sense of accomplishment of growing out of previous confines.
I would like to now what confines, and who creates them.? do confines real exist?and when you surpass all you
confines, what have you become?  do you become omniscent?
