I have been a comics fan since 1961 when I discovered them at age 8. Since childhood Steve Ditko has been my favorite comics creator.
I worked part time as a comics publisher from 1984 to 2001. When I started this business I read a lot of trade publications. I kept reading how Ditko was influenced by Ayn Rand whom I had never heard of before. And when Ayn Rand was mentioned Atlas Shrugged was usually mentioned also. So I bought a copy and read it.
If it weren't for Steve Ditko I would not be an objectivist today. Ditko is my hero. And now I understand why I was so attracted to his work.
I highly recommend his work to everyone.

When I first encountered Ditko (I think it was when I read the origin story of Spider-Man) I thought his style was weird. But it grew on me and I began to like it very much, especially since Spider-Man quickly became my second-favorite superhero (my first favorite was The Flash, the one in the 1960s without the helmet). And when I found out about Ditko's championship of Ayn Rand, and his personality, I started to love the guy and his work.

Thank you, Bob, for the News link to a photo of him. I would never have dreamed he looked like that. Funny, it never occurred to me to Google his picture, even though I never had any idea of his appearance.

Yes, these authors and artists never do seem to look as we had imagined them - with the possible exception of Philip Jose Farmer........

If it weren't for Steve Ditko I would not be an objectivist today

I will give that thought a resounding second.  I had always been a fan of Ditko's work, primarily Spider-man, but it was his post-spider-man work that drew me in.  Someone who could create such new exciting and diverse characters as Spider-Man, Dr. Strange, Hawk and Dove, The Creeper, The Question, Shade the Changing Man and Mr. A was worth attention.

I never knew about his objectivist leanings (or even the rumors of why he had left such a high profile assignment as Spider-Man).  But without him I never would've picked up Atlas Shrugged so I have him to thank for inspiring such a major change in my own life
