Check out: Pork Busters

The website was set up after Delay's wonderful comments. It promotes cutting pork projects to offset the proposed spending on Hurricane Katrina relief. It lists pork projects by state and whether each congressman has committed to cutting any of his state's projects. The website has received some national press and seems to have at least a little bit of momentum. See www.instapundit.com for some more details.

Yeah, I'll believe it when I see it but at least people are starting to speak up about it. You have to start somewhere.

"Pork Busters" is a great idea. So far, the only one to agree with cutting pork to her own district is Nancy Pelosi, (D). Yes, a Democrat. Comment on the "Golden Gate Bridge Seismic Retrofit" $ 58,800,000 project: "This is a necessary project, but does not need to be paid for by the federal government." I'd say by any government - that bridge would be a good money maker if privatized, as all roads and bridges ought to be - but it is a good start. Why have we not heard anything as sensible from a Republican?.

Congressman Jeff Flake (R) Arizona announced several years ago that he would no longer vote for any pork, including for his district.  He took a huge amount of heat for it in Arizona.  The other Republicans got a prominent state legislator to run against Flake mostly on that issue.  Flake trounced him.  Flake has consistently held that position since that time.  Ten Congressmen and Senators including Flake voted against the latest highway bill because of the earmarked pork projects.  Most if not all were Republicans.  These are people who have actually taken this stand already, as opposed to making commitments. 

Pelosi's stand is good as well, but apparently thie linked site only includes commitments made to them as opposed to real actions already taken.

Pardon my Arabic, but I can't believe that Ron Paul actually had to propose a fucking Constitutional amendment to make the Federal government obey the Constitution's strict enumeration of powers. As my wife puts it, "That blows."

One would think that the Ninth and Tenth Amendments, which have been part of the Bill of Rights for centuries, would be enough to keep the pigs in Washington in their pen.

"The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people."

"The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."

I read these to my wife, and explained their meanings in modern English, and she was flabbergasted that the federal government gets away with ignoring them. She's more of an American than most of the native-born "citizens" I know.
