Thank you, Fred, for your enthusiastic and accurate report. And thanks for inviting me to give the keynote talk.

Way to go Fred! I always suspected that West Virginia was a hotbed of Radian philosophy. OK, I lied, but in any case, there will be no more West Virginia jokes from me. Now, about this fourfold way …

Fred,

What was the response to your four-fold theory of truth talk?

In case you are not aware, I wrote in Objectivity 1, 6 that Rand's and Peikoff's statements on truth draw on both the correspondence and coherence theories (the former more). It seems to me that any pragmatic sense could be reduced to or be viewed as one or the other of these two. Also, it's unclear to me what you mean by an "intuitionist theory of truth." I'm aware of the intuitionist view of mathematics and intuitionist moral theory, but not that one.  There is no entry for it in the Encyclopedia of Philosophy (1972 edition). What philosophers by name have advocated this theory of truth?

Tibor,

You have a standing invitation to return anytime.

Greg,

No, and Ed had me delete that paragraph as being a bit premature. We don't want to spook anyone--especially this close to Halloween.

Jason,

I thinking of writing the talk out. Stay tuned.

Merlin,

Hi buddy. The response was good and very supportive. That may be due to the fact that the talk has something to please everyone, the correspondentist, the coherentist, the intuitionist and the pragmatist.
For the loaddown on how there four theories can be integrated, see Nicholas Rescher's book "The Coherence Theory of Truth." The subtitle of the talk could very well have been "Rand and Rescher: A Meeting of the Minds"

To All: I have been pushing Rand at these meeting since the late 80s. The response has always been warm even when critical. Maybe that's why I've been president since 1988.

Fred

Fred, sounds like a really interesting event (the nature of truth issue is a fascinating one.)

I'm sorry I don't live closer to West Virginia. Do you have the power to physically move the state? My understanding is that it's a very tiny state and mostly mountains so no one much will miss it if it's uprooted and moved to the West Coast perhaps as landfill after the "big one" the 10.2 cleaves the San Andreas fault out here...

Just a thought.
