As much as Reagan ended up suprising me in some ways, I still don't think there has been enough, er, research done on the part of professional actors when they attempt a transistion into high-level politics. Transplanting cults of personality is tricky business. Opportunity definitely lies waiting within the skills transfer, though.

He started really showing that he was losing perspective in his convention address. He just didn't work the crowd right. It was a tough crowd, under the surface.

And yet that was a good convention speech...

It was a fun speech to watch. Not his best acting, though. He was hyperanimated.

I agree with Joe.

I also wish Ventura'd run for a higher office.

Ventura? Really?

I don't think he's smart enough to do more than he did. I love the guy, but I hardly consider him a tactician.

I think that was part of his charm.  Because of his personality and marketing he can be more of a hardass on libritarian issues and get away with it.

That and I'm not so sure president, but congress might be interesting.

Tibor,

(sigh)

I agree about Arnie's changing political idealism. Watching, you get the feeling that he's selling out. I do hope he goes back to making movies - they're really very good.

Reagan's films were only all right - not really good like Arnie's.

Arnie ain't no Reagan as a politician, that's becoming clearer and clearer (well, Reagan did oppose abortion, so he had his own warts).

Still, I wonder if there's a connection between political performance and artistic performance somewhere...

You aren't going to get people much better in terms of their ideas than Arnie until this educational effort of which SoloHQ is a part produces serious results. After all, it isn't just politicians who are off the wall politically--most of the public is, too. As Rand wrote, "It's earlier than you think."

Yes, but that would have only worked for the short-term.

(sorry, couldn't resist - flog me now with the wet objectivist noodle)

"only all right" pays too much praise to Reagan's body of cinematic work.

Knute Rockne makes it above the bar, but that's about it.  If you want a hilarious movie experience, watch "The Killers" - Reagan's last film and Angie Dickinson's first (1964).  This was supposed to be the ABC network's first TV movie, but it turned out too violent for the network so it went to theatres instead.  I believe it's the only film where Reagan played a "heavy" (you can tell because he squints a lot to look menacing) - and he and Lee Marvin slap Dickinson around for most of the film.  It's just a bad awful movie.
