Vera,

I can appreciate your creation, pursuit and enjoyment of values portrayed in this article.  Thank you for sharing.

I especially found this passage illuminating:
The fun part was again my belief in my creative abilities and the trust of my Ex in me.
Evidently, your breakup remained amicable.  What a better world we would have if all relationships could end gracefully once the exchange of values had completed.  All of us could enjoy much more total value during our lifetimes through the formation of new relationships that build on the values of the old ones.  I get the impression that one must possess great self-esteem to accomplish this.  Books discussing codependency corroborate this impression.

I am no expert in relationships, so I would love to see more examination of these from an Objectivist perspective.  Branden, Hurd, Kenner, et. al. have blazed some trails in this area.

Vera,

Ayn Rand made the call: "Let me see it made real. Let me see the answer to the promise of that music. Not servants nor those served; not altars and immolations; but the final, the fulfilled, innocent of pain. Don't help me or serve me, but let me see it once, because I need it. Don't work for my happiness, my brothers; show me yours; show me that it is possible; show me your achievement; and the knowledge will give me courage for mine."

"Don't work for my happiness; show me yours."

Thank you.

Thank you all for your appreciation - hope I can start a new fad among the objectivist:
What have I enjoyed / achieved most recently!
Feel free to add to this discussion your own enjoyments/achievements, if you don't want to write an article yourself. You won't believe how loath most parasites around me get to hear of it. A good sign that I'm on the right track :-) And your feedback encourages me even more to keep going ... one more of my own at the end ...

Luther:
I haven't read any of the authors you mention, though I have heard some about their work. Being totally obsessed with my own life I never had much time to focus on relationships ... which might have been a good thing in itself: the value I received from my relationships was the only interest I had in them. Those values don't leave after the romantic feelings burn out. I'll try to get another article in on the 'interaction with others'. It ties in nicely with the concept of enjoyment of self and others ... and what better enjoyment of others to discuss than our lovers :-) whom we hopefully chose on their value to us ...

Adam:
Thanx for putting a philosophical perspective on my article - if I had known these words by Ayn verbatim I'd have used them as an introduction to my article. It could very well be the motto of my own Odyssey - not to develop my own life (I can take care of that), but to see others around me doing it with their's!

Enjoyment of Ability Acknowledged:
Competition was fierce for the Ballroom Dancing tournament of the Eurogames beginning of August in Munich. If you haven't heard of them, don't worry - these are the Gay and Lesbian Eurogames, and though most people never heard of them, the dancers this year were absolutely world-class ... no less world-class though was the organisational talent of one woman who has managed to organise this major event in the Olympia-Hall in Munich. Seeing her dedication to make this a successful and memorable event was as beautiful and as arousing to me as some of the female A class couples in Latin dancing. Though having little time to talk to her during the Eurogames, I was very much impressed with her focus on a task to be done, her improvisational skills in the face of requirements she had never faced before, even the almost total integration of her private life (her lover was another organiser for the badminton tournament) for several weeks into an achievement that is rarely seen these days.
My thanx and appreciation to Gabi not only for her first-rate management of this beautiful two-day event (and several month of preparation), but my open admiration for her ability to get this daunting work done with so much self-assurance and belief in her own abilities!

I desperately hope that such a thing happens—that is the sort of thing that is probably the most sorely lacking among all the deficiencies of organized Objectivism.

Talking amongst ourselves about reason, selfishness, and capitalism is pretty pointless if we never actually get out and live the kind of life that Objectivism tells us is possible, ne?

... my most Recent Enjoyments in ... Work

- The Creation of Ability

In spring this year I started working in the personally most challenging project yet. My customer insisted on fixed times to be present, fixed rules by which to do my work, fixed behaviour by which to deal with colleagues. For a freelancer like me these were unheard-of requirements.

In practice this meant: work when the clock strikes, not when there’s work to do; do the work by prescribed rules whether they produce results or not; and treat all your colleagues as if they were far superior geniuses even if they sabotage your work.

The first few weeks I mostly rebelled against these restrictions, not quite being able to believe that this can really be true, which almost got me fired from the team. Only my excellent work results made it a hard decision for them to keep me on. After all you can’t squander a good cadaver if you have parasites to feed; and I had no better offers at the to earn a living, so I stayed on.

Over time I worked myself free of this morass by being present when requested (and appearing busy), but doing my real work when I thought it was necessary; by ostensibly following the implementation-rules, yet doing my work to the best of my own abilities; and finally by making myself independant of the parasites who only wanted to shine in the splendor of my achievements.

And my strategy worked! Last week I was promoted to leader of my sub-team (for which I have picked the members), most of the implementation-rules were changed according to the superior results of my guidelines and will be adapted even more in my new role as team-leader, and I finally got fully rid of those team-members who plagiarized my achievements and stabbed me in the back for my efforts. The worst of which will probably soon leave the project, as she’s no longer the star of the team.

To top it all off, I was even offered more money for my work J, from a company that is known for it’s stingy remuneration!

In spite of all the odds stacked against me, I was not fired from the project, but the project and many of it’s team members changed to incorporate many of my abilities of getting results and of weeding out parasites. Simply because I refused to compromise my belief in my own abilities and did not willingly agree to become a cadaver for every parasite out for a bite.
