Bravo, Eric! Well-aimed barbs at deserving targets, & an always-timely reminder that to be true to one's self, one must first know it. Nice writing, too. Thoroughly enjoyable. Thank you.

Amen, brotha. Here from within the heart of Keating City (Dallas), your words ring loud and true. This city is infested.

There are defined, trendy circles of thought/religion/style/politics that most people feel they have to absorb themselves into. They are like chameleons taking on the color of their chosen surroundings, no questions asked, seeking comfort in the acceptance of the masses and the convenience of having their answers provided for them through no effort of their own. I always seem to be the one who conducts herself in some rogue manner that prevents me from being assimilated into these circles. That wasn’t always a nice thing. Upon reading The Fountainhead, I met Peter Keating and finally understood the separation I felt with many of the folks I encountered daily. Now it IS a nice thing. I am also quicker to squelch any Keating that may show its toothy gleam in my mirror.

Great article, Eric. You made my day.

I believe that a good solution would be to take our philosophy of reason and use it to cut off the 'Peters' of mankind :)

Eric:

I say "bravo" to the spirit of your article as well. However, I want to say that I almost stopped reading after the first paragraph. There is nothing inherently wrong with talking on a cell phone, eating with chopsticks, or smiling at strangers. The intention you placed on these people - to schmooze, to assimilate, to impress - I can't see how you would know without talking to them. Rather, I have the image in my mind of a rather misanthropic person walking along looking for the worst possible impulse in everyone he comes across.

Now, obviously that isn't you, because the rest of your article is fantastic. I just wanted to say that while it is important to be cautious, lest our lives be overrun with Keatings, it is also important that we not become overly angry and suspicious in the process.

At the risk of sounding all Eastern and New-Agey - I love mankind, and I don't want to be too dismissive. You wouldn't believe the fabulous people I meet. (And lots of them have cell phones and eat with chopsticks. So do I, come to think of it.)

LOL! Oh Ash! I felt the same way about the very first paragraph as well but I agree, the rest of it was wonderful! I too use chopsticks at times. I think they are fun! Especially if you are on a diet as they do take a bit of getting used to .. it used to take me several tries to get just a morsel of food into my mouth instead of my lap. LOL!

Eric, your article (with my one exception) was indeed snappy, to the point, and oh so true!

Sadly, being exposed to 'reason' or the philosophy of Objectivism, even embracing it doesn't guarantee that a person will actually really understand what it means to become totally self aware.

It took me a very long time to understand a lot of it because many within the 'movement' are simply wearing ribbons themselves and so provided very conflicting examples as I was trying to piece it all together. In the end, I decided that I'm not quite the Objectivist, but I haven't stopped trying to use reason in my own life. *grin* If anything though, I'm definitely a SOLOist. :)

It's great to see a new 'face' here on SOLOHQ and I look forward to more articles.

Then again, if you wrote in the last month or two, I probably missed it as I was too busy to keep up here.

Joy :)

A very well written article containing a lot of truth and a lot of opinions I share, but if we encourage people to accept Objectivism, and as more people do accept it and believe its philosophy, aren't we opening Objectivism to all thos Peter Keatings in the world? As more people come to acce[t and believe in the philosophy behind Objectivism, won't that also mean that many Peter Keatings will profess to belive in Objectivism, simply to appear like they are not Peter Keatings?

Just a thought I wanted to share with all of you to keep you thinking!

Yes, Danneskjold, I think it's an illusion to assume that the Peter Keatings are all "out there" somewhere, rather than right here at home. His attributes apply to all of us, and anyone who thinks there's not one smidgen of Keating in him should take a good personal inventory. To nurture the Howard Roark within, we must first acknowledge the Keating; only then can we conscientiously keep tabs on ourselves, making sure we are acting from reason and not out of the desire to please the crowd.

Wow, another eye opening opinion in my quest for the truth. It is not easy to constantly be judged by the Paul Keatings of the world because of so-called difference. If you are different, it brings fear, therefore isolation, therefore loneliness. But to 'fit in' is even harder. I have tried even to the point of myself being a 'paul'. I just can't do it. My whole body feels like it's choking. But to speak my truth gives me the biggest rush. Thankyou for your article. I needed this today.
